Whitefish was facing some tough choices on its upcoming budget, and time was ticking. Like many local governments nationwide, Whitefish was facing slow revenues due to a building slowdown. The city was looking at property tax increases, service reductions caused by lay-offs and wage concession discussions with worker unions to stay afloat.

Winter Sports, Inc., which owns the then-Big Mountain Ski and Summer Resort, was betting on itself, looking to purchase 40,000 shares of its own stock. The company felt its stock was under-priced and would present excellent opportunities as the resort grew.

The Bulldogs boys tennis team was feeling good after winning its third straight state title. The team had racked up 11 divisional titles and six total state championships since its start.

With the county’s timber industry hurting, concern in the Valley was mounting over how sustainable the tourism economy would be moving forward. Tourism overall was down in the county about 9 percent in the previous year and as much as 30 percent statewide.

June 4, 1970
Flathead County residents didn’t exactly turn out for the primary election, with a very light turnout across the Valley. The highest vote-getters received about 3,000 votes throughout the county. Voters were deciding on a Senate seat, Railroad and Public Service Commissioner, state representatives, County Treasurer and more.
