Wrestlers show improvement at Western A Duals
The Bulldogs started slow but went out strong at last week’s Western A Duals in Ronan.
Whitefish went 1-2 on day one, losing to Polson and Mission/Charlo and beating Big Sky. Then on Saturday they went 3-0, beating Plains/Hot Springs, Hamilton and the Glacier JV.
The team won Pool 2 in the tournament.
“We started off a little slow but finished really strong,” head coach Danny Neff said. “A lot of that is just figuring out fundamentally that if we do the basics correctly, we’re going to win matches. We had a talk after day one after going back to what we know instead of getting too technical.”
Whitefish got a boost with the return of Dakota Flannery, who had so far been out with an injury this season.
Brian Sweeney (285) went 7-0 on the weekend as well.
“He’s really taken off. He puts a spark underneath the team and we get going after that,” Neff said of Sweeney.
This week the team will head to the Cut Bank Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Neff said he’s excited to see what his team can do with some of his key wrestlers back in the lineup, though Ashton Akey will be out with a concussion.
“We feel pretty good about it,” Neff said. “I’m really looking forward to our lineup this weekend and seeing what we can do as far as competing.”
