City constructs new transit hub north of library

A new transit hub designed to provide a centralized location for pick-ups and drop-offs between different transportation modes has been constructed downtown near Depot Park.

The City of Whitefish recently constructed the transit hub located in the parking lot north of the Whitefish Community Library as part of improvements to the park. A second entrance was added to improve traffic flow through the lot and a transit shelter with a bike rack was installed.

An information display board is also planned for in the future.

City Senior Project Engineer Karin Hilding said the transit hub creates new possibilities.

“Our goal is to encourage the expansion of transit services available to Whitefish employees, residents, and visitors — and ultimately, to reduce traffic congestion and parking demand in downtown Whitefish,” she said.

Beginning this winter, Eagle Transit, the SNOW Bus, and hotel shuttles are expected to use the transit hub as their main downtown Whitefish stop.

This will help eliminate the congestion caused by buses stopping to pick-up and drop off passengers in the Spokane Avenue and Central Avenue driving lanes, according to the city.
