A long-term lease for the Whitefish Lake Golf Club had just been approved by city council. The previous 20-year lease for the city land on which the golf course operated was due to expire in 2018, however the club was looking to build a maintenance facility that would cost upwards of $750,000 and needed to secure the longer lease in order to move forward with those plans.

Dec. 21, 2000

It had just been announced that in March of the next year Big Mountain would play host to the U.S. Alpine Championships which would bring some of the world's best skiers to Whitefish. The competition was expected to bring over 1,000 athletes, family and coaches to the area.

30 years ago

Dec. 20, 1990

Construction had recently begun on the Whitefish Lake Lodge and developer Dan Averill was explaining his hopes for the project. The project was set to be completed in three phases, the first was a set of condominiums, second was the hotel and facilities and the third was 15 additional condo units. Construction was hoped to be completed by early 1993 and Averill said he wanted the Whitefish Lake Lodge to be special, something that stood out in Whitefish.

40 years ago

Dec. 18, 1980

The Whitefish Chamber of Commerce and Whitefish City Council were arguing over who would foot the $400 energy bill for the downtown Christmas lights. With both parties lacking the funds, the lights were being threatened of being unplugged with just a few days away from Christmas. Community members were beginning to step up to pay the bill and keep the lights shining.

50 years ago

Dec. 17, 1970

The Montana Winter Fair was looking ahead to its 25 anniversary. The winter fair had grown significantly over the years and was expected to continue on that growth curve. The Montana Winter Fair was put on as a celebration of the agricultural community and the “western way of life.”
