Bugs, Rice Krispie treats, and cakes figured largely in the third annual Edible Book Contest recently at the Whitefish Community Library.

The contest drew a smaller crowd than last year but introduced a new tradition of being held under the library’s spacious portico.

“It was a good way for people to find out about edible books and vote,” said staff member Conny Miersma, who oversaw the voting and the feast afterwards.

Joseph Vasquez, creator of an edible recreation of Theresa Greenaway’s book, “The Big Book of Bugs,” came away with the People’s Choice Award, chosen by popular vote of those attending.

Other winners were: Sarah Vasquez: Most Creative Use of Materials for her recreation of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain; Christopher and Lucy Wood: Best Use of Rice Krispie Treats for their recreation of “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein; Jackson and Lucas Marney: Scariest for their recreation of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets;” and Madeline Grove: Best Complete Scene from a Novel for “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck.

The entries, all cakes this year, were happily feasted upon by participants and passersby alike after the awards ceremony. Winners received a gift certificate from contest sponsor Bookworks.
