Initial design plans emerged for a new Whitefish High School. The committee came out with three plans, ranging in price from $16.9 million to nearly $20 million.

20 years ago Aug. 17, 2000

The Flathead Valley was keeping an eye on a fire raging on Elk Mountain off Highway 2. The fire had so far consumed 880 acres but was still spreading.

30 years ago Aug. 16, 1990

The city was looking ahead to the next six years of planning. The City Council outlined the next several years of street improvements, which included four total street rebuilds, three major sewer projects and three smaller sewer projects, all paid for with gas tax funds.

40 years ago Aug. 21, 1980

The city of Whitefish was in the unfortunate position of considering layoffs to its police force, after the department received a much lower budget than requested. The department was facing a $3,000 to $12,000 shortfall, depending on how “we tighten up our belts,” Police Chief George Wartnow said.

50 years ago Aug. 20, 1970

Whitefish voted to move its emergency communications center from the Whitefish Taxi building to the Cadillac Hotel. The change would take place in September, and the new site would offer 24-hour answering service.
