Progress toward lake name change positive

| August 11, 2020 10:18 AM

Lost “Loon” Lake

It’s good to see the progress of getting the name changed to officially be called Lost Loon Lake as the Whitefish Lake Golf Association has promoted the change for over 15 years. Thanks to Frank and Paula Sweeney for handling the legal process to finalize the name change. One correction in the article about the name change is that Whitefish Lake Golf Club is the sole owner of the South Course, which borders Lost Loon Lake and the city has no ownership interest in that property. The city does own the North Course property, which was privately purchased years ago and granted to the city by the Golf Association. Whitefish Lake Golf Club now leases the North Course from the city and this has been a mutually beneficial arrangement for both parties since 1934. While I’m revealing the history of the Golf Course it should be noted that beginning in 1985 the Golf Course assumed all the day to day maintenance of the Whitefish Cemetery. Up until then the city staff was responsible for maintaining the cemetery. This arrangement has resulted in another cooperative relationship greatly benefiting the community.

Shorten Your Backswing with Wedges

If you take a long backswing with your short wedges chances are you will decelerate as you come into contact to avoid hitting it too far. The deceleration will cause a poor strike that will either come up short or miss your target badly. Swing back so that your hands are just above your waist with your wrists hinged up. Make a good turn with your hips and shoulders, and accelerate into the shot. You will discover that your distance will be better controlled and accuracy will improve. Every shot in golf should be hit with the club accelerating; even those short putts that plague us all are often missed because we decelerate the putter.
