Central Avenue’s 200 block was lacking, to put it lightly. The city began an installation of a new water main, after the old one sprung a leak, and the entire block had been shut down and dug up while construction took place.

April 6, 2000

As the Big Mountain Ski Resort’s season was coming to a close, skiers were preparing for the furniture race, where couches, chairs and more will be sent down the mountain in a race for prizes. At the same time, a group of girls injured in the same races the previous year were filing lawsuits for their injuries.

30 years ago

April 12, 1990

A federal prisoner was on the loose after breaking free from the Whitefish jail. The prisoner, Jose Gonzales-Cruz, used a reshaped paper clip to pick a lock in the jail’s shower room and slip into a vacant squad room, where he soon found his clothes and climbed out a window.

40 years ago

April 17, 1980

The Whitefish tennis team got off to a solid start, winning its first match 9-3 over the Ronan Chiefs. The season was the first for the Bulldogs, who until this point had not had tennis as a sanctioned sport.

50 years ago

April 16, 1970

The Big Mountain Ski Resort closed out one of its shortest seasons on record, ranging from Dec. 20 to April 12. Despite the short season, it was still a good one. One of the bright spots for the year was the new Alpinglow Inn.
