After 15 years without the celebration, the Whitefish High School’s homecoming parade was returning to downtown Whitefish. The parade had been discontinued years before due to student misbehavior on the floats.

20 years ago

Sept. 23, 1999

As Glacier National Park prepares for snow this coming weekend, 20 years ago the skies in the Valley were still smokey from a pair of fires in the park. Both the Anaconda Fire and the Teepee Creek fires were still burning in Glacier, though at just 1,400 acres combined.

30 years ago

Sept. 21, 1989

The city of Whitefish was being offered part of the Burlington Northern depot as a gift, with the intention of the depot becoming the site for a Stumptown Historical Society museum. The city had to decide if they could afford to accept the gift, as costs for maintenance, repair and the addition of an elevator would come into play.

40 years ago

Sept. 27, 1979

Big Mountain Ski Resort started their sale on winter ski passes for the season, with an adult pass rising from $220 the previous year to $231. Currently passes are on sale for $675. The 1979 pass, adjusted for inflation, would come out to roughly $850 nowadays.

50 years ago

Sept. 25, 1969

Flames towered as high as 500 feet as the Montana Plywood Co. mill in Whitefish burned. The fire cut power to 400 locals and could be seen from Bigfork.
