Science Quencher
The Whitefish Lake Institute is hosting a Science Quencher event on Friday, Sept. 27 from 4-7 p.m. at the mezzanine of the Firebrand Hotel. Complimentary beer, wine and appetizers will be served with “lightning round” talks from local science experts. Speakers include Sam Bourrett, fisheries biologist with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; Doug Chadwick, wildlife biologist and author of 10 books including “The Wolverine Way,” Jim Elser, director of the Flathead Lake Biological Station and Bierman Professor of Ecology; Clint Muhlfeld, research aquatic ecologist wit the USGS Rocky Mountain Science Center; Erin Sexton, senior research scientist, Flathead Lake Biological Station; Jim Williams, Patagonia sponsored author of “Path of the Puma” and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 1 Supervisor.
Reading program
The Whitefish Community Library has resumed its R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) program. This popular program will be offered every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the library’s Heckathorn Community Room. The R.E.A.D. program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method by reading to a dog, but not just any dog. R.E.A.D. dogs are trained, tested, registered, liability-insured therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team. Audubon trip
Flathead Audubon is offering a field trip to the Hawk Watch site in the beautiful Jewel Basin on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to see migrating fall raptors. The hike to the Hawk Watch site will take approximately 2 hours and is uphill at a moderately strenuous pace. Weather can affect the field trip, so dress accordingly. The temperature feels much colder at the ridge-top viewing site than in the valley. This trip is limited to 9 people. Book Group
The Whitefish Community Library Book Group’s monthly meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. in the community room. This month’s book is “Meet You in Hell: Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick and the Bitter Partnership that Changed America by Les Standiford.” Set again the backdrop of the Gilded Age, it captures the majesty and danger of steel manufacturing, the rough-and-tumble of the business world and the fraught relationship between “the world’s richest man” (Andrew Carnegie) and the ruthless coke magnate (Henry Clay Frick) to whom he entrusted his companies.
‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’
FVCC Theatre will open its 2019-2020 season with the modern classic by Tennessee Williams, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Supposedly Williams’ favorite play, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955 and the Tony Award in 1956, 1975, 1990 and 2004. FVCC’s production will run September 26, 27, 28, and October 3, 4 and 5 with 7 p.m. performances in the campus theatre, located inside the Arts and Technology Building.
“’Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ embraces so much of the human experience, both good and bad: social mores, greed, superficiality, mendacity, decay, sexual desire, repression and death,” FVCC Speech and Theatre Arts Professor Joe Legate said. “But the underlying themes of truth and love keep this play universal. These two powerful forces keep the play unswervingly headed toward an exceptionally satisfying conclusion.”
Due to strong language and adult themes, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is recommended for mature audiences only.
