Former WLGC players making themselves known nationally

Annual Meeting on Oct. 5

The Annual Meeting of the Whitefish Lake Golf Association membership will be held on Oct. 5 starting at 9:15 a.m. with a hosted brunch in the restaurant of the clubhouse. The actual business portion of the annual meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. The current financial status of the golf club will be presented along with any planned projects for course improvements in 2020. The various committee chairs will give an update along with Hall of Fame inductions, memorials and election of two new board members for three-year terms. Absentee ballots will be available in the next couple of weeks for those Tier One members unable to attend the Oct. 5 meeting. Currently Jeff Doorn and Norm Nelson are vying for the open seat for a male member and Karen Jacobson is uncontested for the open seat available for a female member.

Hickok and Mance excel on national golf stage

Kramer Hickok, a former WLGC Fourth of July Champion, just qualified for his PGA Tour Card at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship over the past weekend. Mark Mance, a former WLGC Club Champion qualified and played in the U.S. Senior Open earlier this season where he posted two very good opening rounds and just missed the weekend cut. Over 100,000 low handicap players annually enter competitions to play in the USGA National Championships, so qualifying for any of the prestigious events is a major accomplishment.

Lower is always better

When chipping or pitching the golf ball, always choose hitting a lower shot when possible. If you hit a high shot, the bounce and roll are harder to predict. A high shot should only be the choice when you must carry over a bunker or other obstacle. If you short side yourself it may also require a higher shot since there is little room to stop the ball. By hitting the ball lower you have a better chance to hit your target spot and have the ball roll like a putt to the hole. I would add that the misses with a lower shot are more likely to end up much closer than that high shot that doesn’t spin.
