A late-season wildfire in Lakeside threatened evacuations, even as cold and damp weather was set to move in during the week. A fire started on the 4,868-foot Baldy Mountain, consuming 40 acres in the first few hours. About 160 homes nearby were alerted to possible evacuations.

20 years ago

Sept. 30, 1999

In a complete different weather year than 10 years ago, Whitefish was looking at a blanketed Big Mountain after a September snow covered the high country. Big Mountain dusted with snow and frosty trees, and from atop the mountain the snow-capped Great Northern mountain heralded a cold winter to come.

30 years ago

Sept. 28, 1989

A Doritos-eating black bear was shot and killed in Glacier National Park after it was caught snacking in a California tourist’s car. The bear had been too aggressive and habituated to be kept alive, Park Rangers explained.

40 years ago

Oct. 4, 1979

Three were injured after a light plane crash near the Whitefish city airport. The Cessna 182C’s engine failed after the pilot tried to gain altitude from just 150 feet off the ground. The plane dropped to the ground and flipped upside down upon crashing.

50 years ago

Oct. 2, 1969

The city was still looking for the cause of the fire that caused $600,000 in damage and destroyed the Montana Plywood mill the previous week. Vandalism was also reported before and after the fire, including tools stolen from a pickup while the fire was raging.
