Richard Atkinson’s Old Man Walking campaign was making its way through town. The campaign was meant to fundraise the middle school auditorium, with Atkinson putting up his home as collateral until $700,000 was raised.

Nov. 25, 1999

While it was cold and snowy on Big Mountain, local skiers and boarders were sad to hear that the resort would not be opening during the week. The mountain was set to open just Chair 3 by the end of the week, with limited runs available for skiing until more snow began to fill in the rest of the slopes.

30 years ago

Nov. 23, 1989

Charges of misconduct against the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office and an investigation by the state attorney general were two unexpected results of a July diesel spill in Whitefish Lake. The County Undersheriff resigned after records showed he had received double pay for work done during cleanup efforts.

40 years ago

Nov. 22, 1979

The Whitefish City Council took its first crack at a proposed pornography ordinance, which was approved 5-1 in its first reading. The ordinance looked to regulate and enforce the sales of obscene materials within the town, though Police Chief George Wartnow said the law would be tough to actually regulate.

50 years ago

Nov. 27, 1969

A meeting sponsored by the Whitefish Family Life council came to a conclusion – Whitefish needs better sex education. The meeting drew together about 100 participants who engaged in a lengthy discussion on who should teach sex ed and why, with suggestions ranging from adding a course to the high school’s curriculum to ensuring the “word of God” played a role in the teachings.
