Oct. 29, 2009

On Saturday the Bulldog soccer team won the state championship, and 10 years ago the Dogs were set to face the Rams in the state title match. The Bulldogs had squeaked out a come-behind playoff win over Corvallis en route to their fourth straight state appearance.

20 years ago

Oct. 28, 1999

Bears continued to be a concern in Whitefish as Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks fielded 23 bear-related calls in just one day. A number of bears were reported, including in Columbia Falls, along Whitefish Lake and on Highway 93.

30 years ago

Oct. 26, 1989

Despite opposition from some wilderness organizations, the Big Mountain Ski Resort was ready to fire up the grills at the Summit House. The Forest Service approved a full-service, year-round restaurant at the building on Big Mountain, though some worried the decision would bring too many visitors near grizzly habitat.

40 years ago

Oct. 25, 1979

It wasn’t yet Halloween, but a string of bad luck events had Whitefish feeling a bit haunted. In the same week, a police officer was kicked in the head during an arrest, a man survived a 200-yard downhill truck rollover and a local hunter was accidentally shot in the chest. All three people survived.

50 years ago

Oct. 30, 1969

The newly formed Whitefish Family Life Council was looking to make living in Whitefish a breeze in a number of ways. The organization was formed for the “for the purpose of maintaining and enriching this area as a desirable place in which to live and grow,” and would tackle issues like sex and drug education, as well as programs about pollution and church.
