Time to start practicing for Bulldog Open at WLGC

New practice area progress

Thanks to Dick Collins and his crew the newly designed and nearly completed short game practice area will open next week. You can still go out and practice short pitch shots now on the original green and the new bunker and green are sodded and will be usable to improve your greenside sand shots. Frank Landis, who has over 20 years of golf construction experience, has been doing the majority of the excavating and shaping along with our crew and irrigation specialist Ty Phillips. This area promises to be a great addition to the golf facility. When traveling to and from the new practice area please be aware of golfers on the first hole.

Bulldog Open

Bulldog Open entry forms are available in the Golf Shop so put your team of four together and register soon for either the morning or afternoon sessions on Saturday, June 16. Once again we will have a hole in one prize, closest to the pin prizes and various flight awards as well. This is the funding source for our nationally famous junior golf program which provides lessons and other opportunities to juniors at no charge. The entry fee is only $75 per player and will include both a lunch and dinner along with a great time playing in a scramble with your friends.

Try the cut flop shot

A useful shot in every golfer’s arsenal is the greenside flop shot. But while the professionals make it look easy, this shot requires lots of practice to master. The new short game area is an excellent place to work on this shot. If your ball is in the rough near the green, take your lob wedge, or highest lofted club, open the face to where it is almost flat on the ground, take it back low to the ground and swing aggressively through the grass, so the club slides under the ball. Hold your finish low and to about a foot in front of the ball. With practice the ball will pop up and land softly and not roll very far leaving you a good chance to get up and down. This is a shot that should be used rarely by most players as distance control without lots of practice is difficult.

Please Rake the Bunkers

All players should rake the sand whenever they enter a bunker to play a shot. Remember that the new rules of golf allow you to remove loose impediments from the bunker before you make your stroke. This includes rocks, sticks and other items that are found in the bunker.
