While visitation rarely seems to slow these days, tourist numbers and expenditures 10 years ago were down more than 6 percent over the previous year. About 10 million nonresident visitors came to Montana, a drop of 6.4 percent, and those visitors spent 6.2 percent less while they were here, about $3.005 billion in total.

After four years with no speed limit on some roads, Montana drivers were getting new, defined speed limits to adhere to. The state was changing its speed laws, which before had required drivers to “drive at a reasonable and prudent speed,” increasing the speed limit on some roads like Montana 206 heading south to Bigfork and Whitefish Stage Road, but lowering others.

The Whitefish High School band won top honors at the Kinsmen International Band and Choral Festival in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, tying for first in a field of over 100 bands. The band received a 98 out of 100 as their score.

May 24, 1979
Whitefish and other Flathead Valley residents were braving the prairie by wagon. Roughly 180 people and a couple more horses passed through the Valley as part of an old-fashioned wagon train. The trip was in its eighth year and aimed to be as authentic as possible.

Not to say it was a slow week, but adopted squirrels headed up the front page of the Pilot. A resident’s Siamese cat had apparently adopted a family of flying squirrels found inside an unused truck. The cat was splitting time between its own litter and the squirrels.
