Montana had its first swine flu case in Yellowstone County. The swine flu, or H1N1, was spreading in the U.S. and Mexico, with at least 61 people dead of the disease worldwide.

A visitor to Whitefish didn’t get quite the relaxation he was looking for, after finding himself standing face to face with a grizzly bear. A manager at the condo the man was renting noted the bear tends to hang around the neighborhood and was “just a small griz.”

May 10, 1989

Whitefish High School made an adjustment to the clothing code, demonstrated in a fun way by teachers. The school defined just how short shorts can go, with teachers modeling the different clothing types, like sports shorts, cutoffs, swim trunks and cycling shorts, to give kids a better idea of what not to do.

40 years ago

May 10, 1979

April showers bring May … showers, apparently. The area received a month’s rainfall in just one weekend, with more than 2 inches falling and causing lowland flooding. Montana 40 between Columbia Falls and Whitefish was shut down due to flooding on Trumbull Creek.

50 years ago

May 15, 1969

“Youth Revolts” were the topic of a community program hosted by the Whitefish Presbyterian Church. The talk, led by a Flathead Valley Community College instructor, focused on working with troubled junior high and high school students.
