Montana residents were keeping an eye out for the swine flu, which had been reported in Idaho and Washington. While the flu had yet to reach Montana, nearly 300 cases were reported in the U.S. by the World Health Organization, and about 1,200 worldwide.

May 6, 1999

A record snow day in May meant only one thing — spring skiing. The Big Mountain Ski Resort obtained a special one-day operation permit from the forest service to run the Glacier View chair for one day only, at the price of $10 a ticket.

30 years ago

May 3, 1989

The Flathead Valley welcomed back its two gold medalists from the International Winter Special Olympic Games, held the month before in Lake Tahoe. Former Whitefish resident Ryan Trout won gold in the 3 by 1-kilometer Nordic relay event, while Martin City-based Michael Tallman won gold in the 100-meter Nordic ski and bronze in the 500-meter and 1-kilometer events.

40 years ago

May 3, 1979

The future of the beloved Westana Girl Scout Camp in Stillwater Forest was in question. The camp, which housed 600 to 1,000 girls each summer, would likely shut down if plans for a state prison camp to be built nearby moved forward.

50 years ago

May 8, 1969

The “Small Group” — a collection of student singers at Whitefish High School — were making the rounds as performers in the Valley. The group was getting set for shows with the PTA, the Women’s Club, the Rotarians and even their own musical performance, “Down in the Valley.”
