Vocal quartet celebrates world folk music traditions

| March 12, 2019 1:53 PM

Celebrating world folk music traditions from Bulgaria to Brazil and Japan to Africa, the Whitefish Theatre Company is thrilled to host vocal quartet Women of the World. This award-winning, a cappella ensemble will play one night only on Friday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.

Formed in 2008, Women of the World was born from a dream to bring female musicians from across the globe onto a common platform to explore sounds and rhythms from a vast array of cultures. Hailing from Italy, Japan, Haiti, and India, this internationally acclaimed a cappella quartet performs folk and traditional music, often with a contemporary twist, in 32 of the world’s languages. The unique music that stems from this cross-pollination of genres and global sounds is borderless and spirited, carrying an undeniable message of unity.

Women of the World features four alumni from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Members include founder Ayumi Ueda from Japan, Giorgia Renosto from Italy, Annette Philip from India, and Débòrah Pierre from Haiti. In addition to performing with Women of the World, each professional musician is a multi-talented artist, performing as vocal soloists throughout the United States, as well as contributing to other classical, jazz, rock and traditional music ensembles.

Women of the World has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including African vocal icon Angelique Kidjo and Grammy Award-winning vocalist Bobby McFerrin who called them “beautiful, spirited, loving ... wonderful.” They have also spread their musical message of peace with performances at esteemed venues such as the Blue Note Jazz Club, Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, and the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival. Women of the World were also the Harmony Sweepstakes National A Cappella champions in 2014.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for students with reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office, 1 Central Ave., Whitefish, or by calling 862-5371.
