Whitefish, described as “the frisky Wild West in a classic Rocky Mountain setting,” retained its place as one of the country’s top 100 vacation towns. David and Joan Vokac pointed to the city in their “Great Towns of America” guidebook.

March 11, 1999

Whitefish volleyball was headed to the state tournament after earning a divisional title the week before. Under the direction of head coach Jackie Fuller, the team was 25-1 against Class A teams for the year.

30 years ago

March 8, 1989

Spring had arrived in the Flathead, with high temperatures for the coming week hitting up to 55 degrees and lows of only 25 degrees. The mountain was reporting 103 inches of snow at the summit.

40 years ago

March 8, 1979

The Flathead was preparing for higher gas prices after President Carter’s talks of gas rationing due to the shutdown of Iran’s oil industry. Locals were bracing for $1 per gallon gas prices, though only Wolf Point had hit a statewide high price of 90 cents.

50 years ago

March 13, 1969

Similar to our cold and snowy February this year, reports showed that February in 1969 was no different. A total of 11.7 inches were recorded for the month, up from 6.5 inches from the prior year. Total snowfall reached 94.9 inches by the end of the month.
