Whitefish skier Kelsey Schmid-Sommer continued to dominate telemark ski racing with her fourth consecutive championship. Schmid-Sommer won the women’s National Telemark Champion races in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in an exciting tiebreaker finish.

March 4, 1999

Two women survived a 17-mile hike through the night after their snowmobiles broke down near the Red Meadow area north of Whitefish Lake. The Flathead Search and Rescue team found the women around 10:30 p.m. after they made the trek back to the trailhead by foot. The women had rented the snowmobiles to look for moose.

30 years ago

March 1, 1989

The Montana Department of Health and Environmental Sciences was threatening Whitefish with a $30,000 fine for sewer plant violations. The city was charged with missing a deadline for having its phosphorus plant running on time, being late with monthly test reports and failing to meet biological oxygen demand standards in its emissions.

40 years ago

March 1, 1979

A not-so-surprising report concluded that housing costs were about 10 percent cheaper in Columbia Falls than in Whitefish. In a report that would likely come to similar conclusions today, real estate agents and appraisers agreed that the same property might vary in price from $4,000 to $10,000 between the two cities.

50 years ago

March 6, 1969

A theft had employees at Big Mountain Resort confused over the weekend, as a roll of carpeting roughly 12 feet wide and 40 feet long was stolen from the resort. The carpeting was set to be installed in the new Alpinglow Inn condominium.
