Whitefish Police had some brand new wheels – two wheels, to be exact. The department had just used roughly $50,000 in state grant money to set up a motorcycle force in town. High gasoline prices the previous summer was a consideration for the motorcycles.

July 29, 1999

Some things never change – Twenty years ago, the Pilot started a series looking into whether affordable housing in Whitefish even existed. The series was sparked by a trend toward high-end real estate developments and rising home prices.

30 years ago

Aug. 3, 1989

The town was looking for answers after 29 BNSF cars derailed and spilled diesel into Whitefish Lake. Fuel could be seen on roughly one quarter of the lake’s surface, with one fuel slick stretching about 300 yards.

40 years ago

Aug. 3, 1979

Plans to memorialize the late local photographer and Forest Service silviculturist Danny On were coming together. The trail would likely be a 2- to 4-mile hiking and nature loop on Big Mountain.

50 years ago

July 31, 1969

A brand new vaccine to prevent German Measles was coming to the Valley. The vaccine was anticipated to be as effective in preventing the disease as the Polio vaccine had been. The first measles vaccine was distributed in the United States in 1963, but this particular vaccine protected against a “three-day” strain of the disease.
