A well-known Whitefish local was stepping down from his professional post. Charlie Abell, president and CEO of Whitefish Credit Union since 1967, announced his retirement after more than four decades with the financial institution. Abell said it was the right time with him turning 70 and the credit union turning 75 as well.

July 15, 1999

Whitefish was benefiting from a country-wide Amtrak ridership boost. Whitefish saw a 13% ridership jump from March 1998 to 1999, or 56,533 riders. Nationwide Amtrak was witnessing a 4.7% boost.

30 years ago

July 19, 1989

Safeway employees in Whitefish were prepared to strike if a contract bargaining agreement was not made by July 23. The company was ready to hire replacement workers by that date if no agreement was reached.

40 years ago

July 19, 1979

Big news on Big Mountain — the resort was reporting a record $3.7 million gross revenue from the previous season, while plans for a new hotel called the “Hibernation House” were coming together. The hotel would hold 200 skiers at $36 per room.

50 years ago

July 17, 1969

The Mr. X hospital donation competition — in which an anonymous donor announced a $30,000 donation if the community could match that — netted a total of $70,755 between the two parties. The donations went to the new North Valley Hospital, then under construction.
