Avalanche awareness
Montana State Parks will host the Friends of the Flathead Avalanche Center for a Know Before You Go Avalanche Awareness presentation at Lone Pine State Park on Saturday, Jan.26 from 4to 5 p.m.
When recreating in avalanche country, be safe and know before you go. Learn general information about avalanche hazard, how to avoid it, and the proper equipment to carry when traveling in avalanche terrain. From experienced back-country skiers to front country snowman-making champions this is a wonderful opportunity to refresh your avalanche knowledge or get an introduction to avalanche safety.

Kiddie Carnival
The Whitefish Kiddie Carnival will run Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during the Whitefish Winter Carnival. The event will be full of activities for both children and community members at the Whitefish Middle School gym. This annual event will be run by the Whitefish High School Leo Club, a division of the Lions Club. Art contest
VFW Auxiliary Post 276, 20 Baker Ave, Whitefish, welcomes all students in grades 9-12 (including home-schooled), who meet the qualifications to participate in its yearly art competition. Scholarships
The Flathead County Democratic Women are awarding scholarships to local area students toward advanced education. These scholarships are open to students planning on attending colleges at any location, not just Montana schools. Applications can be obtained from the career counselors at the various local schools.
FVCC music
Flathead Valley Community College Music Department’s spring concert series opens Feb. 1 with a performance by world renowned violinist and FVCC music faculty member Wai Mizutani.
Accompanied by Alma Ramlow and Natilee Radosevich, Mizutani will play timeless classical romantic and dance pieces by Spanish and Italian composers, including Pablo de Sarasate, Nicolo Paganini and many others.
The series will continue on March 15 with a concert featuring FVCC music faculty members and guests, including Flathead High School Choral Director Jennifer Stephens, Glacier High School Choral Director Sandee Sauer; Columbia Falls High School Choral Director Emily Hackethorn, and FVCC faculty members Amy Beth Chisholm, Nicole S. Sanford and Wai Mizutani.
Free and open to the community, both concerts will begin at 7 p.m. in the large community room inside the Arts and Technology Building on the FVCC campus.

Nordic skiing at Meadow Lake
On Sunday, Jan. 27, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., Glacier Nordic Club and Meadow Lake Resort will be celebrating the grand opening of the Meadow Lake Nordic Trails with free ski passes, lessons and ski rentals. Meadow Lake will have an assortment of snacks and hot beverages throughout the day. Come on out and get some outdoor exercise and learn about cross-country skiing. There will be free 45-minute beginner lessons offered on the hour by Glacier Nordic Club’s professional instructors and free two-hour demo rentals from Glacier Cyclery and Nordic. After a day of skiing, from 3-5 p.m., enjoy a Grand Opening Après Ski Party sponsored by Sacred Waters Brewing at the Meadow Lake Bar & Grille.
