Whitefish got a Christmas gift from the federal government – $650,000 in grant money for emergency services. The money was to help the city transition to 24/7 emergency service.

Jan. 7, 1999

The Pilot and the Hungry Horse News got a change of hands, as the newspapers were sold from the Kennedy family to Lee Enterprises Inc. The Kennedys owned the Pilot for 20 years prior to the sale.

30 years ago

Jan. 11, 1989

The new Whitefish Area Rapid Transit shuttle bus, later renamed the SNOW bus, was proving useful in its first 10 days of service. The bus ferried 1,216 skiers between Whitefish and Big Mountain in its opening days.

40 years ago

Jan. 11, 1979

The warmth of a 1 degree Fahrenheit morning broke a 12-day streak of sub-zero temperatures in Whitefish. The cold spell took its toll on the town, causing stalled cars, busted water pipes, frozen water mains and, the Pilot reported, an increase in the flu.

50 years ago

Jan. 9, 1969

The proposed new North Valley Hospital was in danger, as inflation took its toll on funds set aside for the project. Delays caused by the state and federal governments were estimated to cost the project $1.5 million, with rising costs for every year the project was delayed.
