Police issue warning over phone scam

The Whitefish Police Department is warning about a phone scam that is occurring in the Flathead Valley involving those posing as law enforcement officers.

As part of the scam, the caller says that there is a warrant for your arrest for not following a court order. The caller identifies themselves as a police officer, and in some cases states they are the chief of police or sheriff.

“After a conversation in which they tell you that you are going to be arrested, they will follow it up with a statement indicating you can post bond or ‘take care of it’ by giving them a credit card number or a bank account number,” according to a release.

The scam uses a computer to make it look on caller ID as though the call is coming from a police or sheriff’s department.

Whitefish Police say if you receive a phone call like this don’t give out any information, hang up and report it to the local police or sheriff.
