Just weeks after the Montana Supreme Court sided with Whitefish on the issue of the “doughnut” planning jurisdiction, county and city staff were again at odds over a proposal to change what businesses were allowed along Highway 93 South. City staff wanted to protect downtown business, while county staff wanted to expand retail along the corridor.

Jan. 21, 1999

Whitefish wasn’t exempt from Y2K worries. City staff was already looking into making sure its systems could handle the Y2K bug, which occurred in older computer systems that used a two-digit number system for the year and could see calculation issues once the year hit 00 for 2000.

Jan. 25, 1989

Community members were riled up after police chief Dave Dolson’s claim of Whitefish being the “drug capital of northwest Montana.” The issue caused many bar and business owners to speak out, and the story was picked up by the Associated Press, USA Today, the Spokesman-Review and the Missoulian. Locals said the drug problem was no worse than any other town.

40 years ago

Jan. 25, 1979

Photographer and Forest Service silviculturist Danny On died after hitting a tree while skiing alone on Big Mountain. On was well known for his wildlife and nature photography, and the summer hiking trail on the mountain was later named in his honor.

50 years ago

Jan. 23, 1969

What’s in a name? That which we called the Flathead County Airport was just as sweet under its new name, the Glacier Park International Airport. The name change hoped to help associate the airport with Glacier National Park and attract more visitors.
