New testing at the site of a 1989 Burlington Northern derailment showed that the leaked diesel fuel had not gone away. Testing by Whitefish Lake Institute showed diesel contamination in water samples taken from Whitefish Lake at 16 times the maximum contaminant level.

Dec. 23, 1999

Whitefish’s new Alternative School was unveiled during an open house. The school, located in the high school annex building across Pine Avenue, took in about 12 students for a new type of individualized curriculum.

30 years ago

Dec. 21, 1989

Big Mountain Resort was showing off its new gondola lift rides, which were being used to carry people to the Summit House for dinner on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The gondolas would be used for summer, but were not yet equipped to handle skiers.

40 years ago

Dec. 20, 1979

A new U.S. Department of Energy directive was causing some chills to local employees. The directive, active since July, mandated that commercial building thermostats be set to 65 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 55 overnight. A survey of Whitefish businesses showed a slight cheating of a few degrees as the winter set in.

50 years ago

Dec. 25, 1969

After a number of pre-Christmas reservations on Big Mountain were canceled due to a lack of snow, the resort’s reservation and sales manager John Coffee estimated losses at about $90,000. As of Christmas, the resort only had about 30-inches of snow on the summit.
