An amazing year of images

Photographer Chuck Haney’s favorite shots often come when he takes the time to explore new spots in familiar places. This year on a trip to the badlands of North Dakota he was forced to take a break from bike riding due to suffering heat stroke.
He drove ahead of his group and then climbed up on a bluff he’d never explored.
“There was this fantastic view over the Little Missouri River,” he said. “I went back later with a photo group and went to the secret spot.”
“We waited for two hours and at sunset the clouds opened up and lit up the whole view,” he said. “I like finding something new in a place I’ve been before.”
Haney is a professional freelance photographer and writer based in Whitefish. He travels extensively taking photographs for numerous publication and has published several books.
He will present a photography show of his work on Friday, Dec. 20 to benefit the North Valley Food Bank. Featured in the show this year are pictures from Ireland, Prague, Hawaii and New Orleans along with accompanying music from each location.
The show begins at 7 p.m. at the O’Shaughnessy Center downtown. Admission is by donation of food or raffle ticket purchase to benefit the food bank.
The show features about 500 photos from “an amazing year of images.”
Haney built his career on natural landscape shots, but in the last decade or so he has been taking more cityscape shots experimenting with the predawn light of city streets. The variety keeps his work fresh.
“Part of the fun is getting things that are unexpected,” he said. “Stumbling across something that you didn’t expect.”
