Whitefish was looking into the feasibility of a taxi service, which some members of the community felt was sorely lacking. The taxi service would need to be safe, reliable and probably a nonprofit, a group of 20 business representatives and city officials concluded. The town had lacked a taxi since the Whitefish Taxi closed five months earlier.

Dec. 16, 1999

Donations were pouring in for Whitefish projects. Just a week after the pool fund received a $500,000 donation, Brad and Linda Kliber donated $200,000 to Project Whitefish Kids, which aimed to create a youth sports complex in the southeast corner of town.

30 years ago

Dec. 14, 1989

Activists took to the trees between Whitefish and Olney by tree spiking, which can damage lumber mill equipment and injure workers if a saw blade hits a spike. Tree spiking carried a maximum $50,000 fine and 10 years in jail.

40 years ago

Dec. 13, 1979

The Whitefish School Board was hoping to curb student drug use with a new policy that allowed faculty to search students with probable cause. According to an anonymous survey in the school newspaper, about 15% of students said they used marijuana daily and 35% said they’d come to school under the influence of a substance.

50 years ago

Dec. 18, 1969

Facing the worst season opening conditions since the beginning of the resort, Big Mountain was not going to make its Dec. 20 opening date. Only 24 inches of snow had accumulated on the top of the mountain, and eight inches of snow were necessary along Chair 1 and the T-Bar runs to open.
