The Whitefish Marathon has been selected by the Road Runners Club of America as the 2020 RRCA Marathon State Championship race.

The race, which is set for May 16, 2020, starts and finishes in downtown Whitefish. The WAVE runs the marathon, which serves as a fundraiser for its scholarship fund for membership to the fitness center.

Since 1958, the RRCA has awarded championship events through a competitive bidding process at the national, regional, and state level to RRCA member events to promote the sport of distance running. As the RRCA State Championship race for Montana, athletes running the Whitefish Marathon will have the opportunity to compete for special awards in the categories of Open, Master (40 years plus), Grand Master (50 years plus), and Senior Grand Master (60 years plus) for male and females.

Any athlete from the state of Montana who is registered for the Whitefish Marathon is automatically eligible for the RRCA State Championship award.

“The RRCA State Championship designation recognizes our efforts to create a premier race in Montana that offers competition for athletes ranging from the elite to those who would like to experience the atmosphere of race day for the first time,” said Whitefish Race Director Todd Oliver. “We are proud of this recognition by the Road Runner’s Club of America and look forward to continuing to grow the Whitefish Marathon.”

The marathon starts and finishes at Depot Park. The course runs south of Whitefish before heading north of town and then runners turn around to end in downtown.

The event offers a marathon, half marathon and a 5K.
