The Bulldogs got their season going at the Owen Invitational in Polson over the weekend.

Camren Ross had the best weekend for Whitefish, going 5-1 for third place at 170.

Ross beat wrestlers from Belgrade, Columbia Falls, Corvallis, Thompson Falls and Lake City en route to his bronze, falling only to Isaiah Allik of Mission/Charlo High School in the semifinal, 5-1.

Jackson Carson (126) went 2-2 on the weekend, defeating his own teammate Carter Moran and Lake City’s Nate Garner, but falling to Eureka’s Gunner Smith and Mission/Charlo’s Walker Murphy.

Kadin Brown (113) and Moran went 1-2, while Rylan McDaniel (170), Ashton Akey (205) and Brian Sweeney (285) all went 0-2.

Head coach Danny Neff said his squad isn’t quite at full strength yet, but he’s happy with what he saw in Polson for so early in the season.

“We have a few kids banged up right now and a few that haven’t got their full 10 days of practice in, so we were limited for our first tournament,” he said. “We have a lot of promise, saw some good things, some things we need to work on but overall it was a good weekend.”

Neff said the big highlight for him was Ross taking third place.

“He wrestled really well. He beat a really good kid for third place,” Neff said. “It was a good motivation builder for him, he’s one of our captains that has a lot of promise.”

This week the team heads to Stevensville on Friday for a triangular with Stevi and Libby. Then on Saturday they’ll compete in the Superior Invitational.

They’ll host their first triangular against Browning and Ronan on Dec. 17 at 5 p.m.
