The Environmental Protection Agency ordered BNSF Railway to start removing contaminated sediments on the Whitefish River, after pollution in the river was found to be the railroad’s responsibility. As part of the clean up, the railroad dug deep pits to further prevent future diesel plumes in the river.

20 years ago

Aug. 26, 1999

A series of workshops in town were preparing small businesses for Y2K. The workshops helped business owners update their computer systems in preparation for an expected bug in operating systems that weren’t made to handle dates ending with 2000.

30 years ago

Aug. 24, 1989

Concern arose during the City Beach boat launch repair project after machines stirred up silt, which flowed down the Whitefish River as a result. A “duck boat” stirred up boulders and left large ruts on the beach, making the launch difficult to use.

40 years ago

Aug. 30, 1979

The Whitefish Lake Golf Club’s new nine-hole addition was laid out and ready for seeding. At the time, WLGC and the city were in disagreement over who should lease the course’s land in the future.

50 years ago

Aug. 28, 1969

There were about to be a lot of new faces when Whitefish Schools opened for the year, and not just young faces. The district was welcoming 23 new teachers in the schools.
