Board of Directors

The Whitefish Lake Golf Association will hold an election for two new board members at the Oct. 12 Annual Meeting of the membership. This year Bill LeLeivre and Tracey Whisenand both complete their three-year terms and replacements will need to be elected to replace them on the board. To be eligible for the board the candidate must be a Tier One (local member) for at least five years and be 18 years old or older. All Tier One members are eligible to vote in the election and absentee ballots will be available three weeks prior to the Annual Meeting for those unable to attend. Anyone meeting the requirements and interested in serving on the board should contact either Terry Nelson at terry@golfwhitefish.com or one of the current board members. If you have questions about serving on the board please call me at 253-9154.

Member/Guest Tournament

This weekend is the Annual Member/Guest Tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club with a full field already registered to play on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24-25. This event features the first round playing in a two-person net best ball format and the second day is a modified Stapleford scoring system where the player earns points based on their handicap. The second day score is a combination of both players performance based relative to par and how many points they must earn, the lower the handicap the more points that the player must earn.

Expectations get in way of a good score

Ever notice that often the first round of the year may be one of your lowest? What happens is we let expectations get in the way and derail good rounds, which is why sometimes players shoot, say 50 on the front nine and 30 something on the back. The ability to stay focused is a huge issue in golf. Justin Thomas shot a course record 61 this past weekend in the Fedex Playoff and attributed it to being in the “zone.” When you are in the “zone” you are not distracted by expectations and just ride the wave. Yogi Berra said it best, “80% of golf is 90% mental and the rest is in our head.” To play your best golf stay in the moment and don’t get ahead of yourself with thoughts like, “if I par the last three holes I will shoot my best round ever,” because when we do we are more likely to finish with bogies or worse. Golf scoring is cumulative but is really one stroke at a time where we have to focus on the shot at hand.
