As City Council looks into the Whitefish Legacy Homes inclusionary zoning program this month, it’s good to remember how long such a project has been in the work. Council in 2009 was also looking to a similar program to require affordable housing be built in the city. Council was between options requiring affordable housing across the board or limiting the requirement to new planned unit developments.

April 29, 1999

What looked like a strange theft turned out not to be monkey business. Whitefish Police investigated the disappearance of six cases of bananas from the North Valley Food Bank, learning that miscommunication, not malice, was the cause. The bananas were taken twice by the same group, who didn’t communicate that they’d already picked them up.

April 26, 1989

City Councilors were continuing their effort to ban skateboards from downtown sidewalks. Council was set to take a second look at an ordinance to keep skating out of Whitefish, as three readings were required before it could become a city law.

40 years ago

April 26, 1979

Whitefish Mountain Resort co-founder and former president Ed Schenck was honored with the “Missoulian Cup.” The cup, presented by the Missoulian newspaper, is awarded for outstanding contribution to the sport of skiing. Schenck was also honored by Governor Tom Judge, who pronounced the following Saturday as “Ed Schenck Day” across the state.

50 years ago

May 1, 1969

The Whitefish Postmaster was anticipating a fee hike for residents after a national budget deficit placed some of the burden on the postal system. Residents were looking at increase of 6 cents to 7 cents for letter mail, and magazine and newspaper rates would hike 16 to 20 percent.
