The Lady Dogs track team claimed the overall Iceberg Invitational title by 1/2 point on Saturday in Columbia Falls, while the boys took silver.

Whitefish had seven first-place wins on the girls side.

Mikenna Ells won both the 400 (1:02.11) and the high jump (5-00), while Ella Greenberg won the 800 (2:37.32), Jade Greenberg won the 1,600, Natasha Abramchuk won the 100 hurdles (16.95), and Jadi Walburn won the 300 hurdles (51.00).

The 4x100 relay took first with a state-qualifying time of 51.59, while the 4x400 took second.

The team scored 185 points to Columbia Falls’ 184.5.

On the boys side, the team took second with 145 points, well behind Columbia Falls’ 220, but had three first place finishers.

Josh Dudley took first in the 400 (53.61), freshman Bodie Smith won the long jump (20-1) and Dillon Botner won the shot put (44-2).

Smith also took second in the 110 hurdles (17.26) and third in the 300 hurdles (46.20).

The 4x100 relay team took second while the 4x400 took fourth.

Head coach Derek Schulz said he was impressed with how his team performed in not-ideal weather.

“We competed well and got a lot out of the meet,” he said. “What we had was consistent season bests and personal bests across the board. There was a lot of steady improvement in almost all event areas.”

The team sent a handful of athletes down to Missoula on Tuesday after press time for the Missoula Top Ten.

The girls 4x100 team of Wilde, Ells, Emily Gunlikson, Lauren Schulz and alternate Kennedy Grove will compete in the relay as well as in individual events.

The boys 4x400 team of Jack Eisenbarth, Dudley, Schwaiger and Lee Walburn, along with Dillon Botner and Smith, will compete as well.

“It’s kind of a highlight type meet for them,” Schulz said. “As a coach I think it’s a neat thing. It’s not necessarily the be-all end-all of meets because it doesn’t include our entire team and all the people we’ll be counting on. But it’s fun for them to be able to brush elbows with top athletes from all the other classes.”

Then on Saturday the team will host the 21st annual Akey, Rosenburg, Murphy Invitational, with roughly 14 teams coming to compete.

“That’s the highlight track and field wise for our community,” Schulz said of the meet. “It’s just been a source of pride that we get a good field of teams there. It’s generally a time of the season when it’s highly competitive, and we want to put on a good meet so people in our community can watch our kids right in Whitefish.”

The meet kicks off at 10 a.m. at the track next to Whitefish High School.
