Montanans heading north or Canadians going south needed to remember to bring their passports in the future, as a new change would require a passport rather than just driver’s licenses or birth certificates to cross the border.

Whitefish students and school staff were reflecting on their own school safety standards after the Columbine High School shooting that claimed the lives of 15 and injured 21 more. Whitefish High School did have an incident the prior year when a student had a .22 rifle on school grounds following the day after a school shooting in Oregon.

April 19, 1989

Employees at the Lounge at the Mountain Mall caught some liquor burglars red handed. After incidents of overnight theft, a few employees hid out in a successful stakeout through the night, catching the burglar in the act, who was charged with felony theft.

April 19, 1979

Some Christmas wishes were set to be fulfilled in the winter as City Council approved a horse-drawn sleigh service. The service would operate on the city’s back streets to keep from increasing traffic. Passengers would not be allowed to drink alcohol on the sleighs, however.

50 years ago

April 24, 1969

About 125 parents gathered together to watch the Concordia Sexual Education Film Strips to help facilitate conversations about sexual education in the community. A committee formed by 20 volunteers was looking for ways to further share the film strips with other families.
