Hard times were getting harder, as unemployment in the county rose 1 percent in recent months to reach 12.2 percent. Nearly 5,900 workers in the Flathead were without jobs.

The Big Mountain’s amphitheater was preparing for a big time show, as Willie Nelson was set to perform later in the week. The amphitheater could hold roughly 5,000 people, and would likely be filled come showtime.

March 29, 1989

Whitefish’s skateboarders were under scrutiny from the city, as the City Council was considering restricting skating downtown. The topic came up after damage to parked cards, collisions with pedestrians and loitering were reported.

40 years ago

March 29, 1979

Declining enrollment and inflating operating costs at Whitefish Schools had teachers on the edge of their seats. Several teacher layoffs could be expected in coming months, Superintendent Russ Giesy warned, including two elementary teachers, one junior high teacher and one teacher at the high school.

50 years ago

April 3, 1969

A record crowd of citizens gathered for a city and school board candidate forum, as a number of positions were open with many interested residents running. Among the positions and issues were the role of the mayor, who would sit on the school board and whether parts of town should join the Flathead Soil and Water Conservation District.
