Whitefish City Council, on Sept. 17:
- Approved a bid from Sandry Construction Company of Bigfork in the amount of $374,836 to construct an extension of Flathead Avenue between the city’s Emergency Services Center and West 18th Street. The link will create a connection to the city’s Public Works facility, which currently uses West 8th Street for access.
The work involves the construction of about 600 linear feet of new roadway, eliminating the need to use West 18th Street, which the city notes is a steep, one-lane driveway. The project will also allow for city water and sewer to be extended to the city Public Works facility.
The estimated total cost of the project, including construction, engineering, and right-of-way acquisition is estimated at $548,000.
- Approved a resolution requesting the distribution of funds from the Bridge and Road Safety and Accountability Act, which provides for a graduated increase in the motor fuel tax with proceeds being allocated to the Montana Department of Transportation and local government.
Whitefish’s gas tax allocation for fiscal year 2018 was $56,000 and the city budgeted the required match of $10,000 to obtain the funds. Though work is not expected this year, the city plans to hold onto the funds to use toward the future reconstruction of Monegan Road.
- Adopted an ordinance creating the Whitefish Climate Action standing committee, which is expected to assist in the implementation of the city’s Climate Action Plan. Work includes establishing a working timeline for implementation, recommending actions and budget priorities and tracking progress toward the plan’s goals.
