The Wich Haus

The idea behind the Wich Haus is to keep things simple.

“Our concept is to do maybe five sandwiches and do them really well,” Jamie Minster, co-owner said. “That’s the philosophy.”

Minster opened the new sandwich shop with her husband, Jason Selby, on Wisconsin Avenue across from Piggyback BBQ. They opened their doors Saturday after a soft opening on Friday.

Minster and Selby aren’t new to the restaurant business — they ran a restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina, before their kids were born. Minster says they moved to Whitefish to be closer to family.

On the menu are five ‘wiches — including a pork, turkey, chicken, rib and veggie sandwich — along with sides of potato salad, cucumber salad, blue cheese coleslaw, whole fruit and potato chips.

With Selby working the kitchen, the sandwiches are thoughtfully put together and stuff a variety of flavors within the bread.

There’s no deli meat in the kitchen, he says, and everything served is as fresh as can be.

“We don’t have any deli meat, so if we’re doing a turkey sandwich we took a turkey breast, roasted it, brined it, sliced it — everything is made how it should be,” Selby said. “When I say braised pork shoulder, there’s a whole raw pork shoulder in [the kitchen] marinating right now that’s going to get braised. I’m going to be in here everyday making everything from scratch. That’s how I believe it should be done, that’s how food should taste.”

The pork ‘wich is a braised pork shoulder, provolone cheese, house pickled red onions and carrots, sautéed greens with herb Dijon mustard served on a hoagie roll.

Selby said he also wants to respect the time of their customers coming in during their lunch breaks by keeping service fast and not wasting time waiting for servers or the check.

While the Wich Haus is just getting off and running now, Minster and Selby are already looking ahead to ski season.

They plan on offering grab-and-go breakfast burritos and sandwiches for powder hounds in a hurry to get up to the mountain, Minster says, and their location is perfect for the skiing traffic through the winter.

And while there’s other lunch offerings in town, Minster says she thinks their unique ‘wiches will be a welcome addition to Whitefish.

“Everybody loves lunch, and if there’s a lot of places to go, that’s a good thing,” she says.

The Wich Haus is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/thewichhaus.
