Bulldogs best Corvallis in final minutes for second win
Another week, another dramatic Bulldogs football victory.
This week it was Jack Eisenbarth scoring the deciding touchdown, punching in a 13-yard run with just 1:31 to play against Corvallis.
Carver Gilman’s PAT put the Dogs up seven to seal the win.
Whitefish (2-2) led the Blue Devils (3-1) 14-12 at the half. In addition to Eisenbarth’s touchdown, Devin Beale scored on a huge 59-yard-run in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Mark Anderson had a solid day leading the offense, going 7 for 17 passing with a 19-yard touchdown strike to Gilman. Anderson also ran in a 1-yard touchdown.
Beale went for 82 yards on nine carries, and Eisenbarth got 54 yards on six carries.
Head coach Chad Ross said other than a rough third quarter, he was impressed with his team’s performance.
“I felt we played some great quarters. They kind of stopped our running game in the third quarter, but first, second and fourth we played really well. A win is a win,” he said.
On the defensive side, Eisenbarth recorded four sacks and forced and recovered two fumbles.
Eisenbarth recently moved from defensive back to defensive end, a move that has made a difference.
“Jack had the most phenomenal game on defense,” Ross said. “He hurt his arm and couldn’t play defensive back, and he did a great job with Butte Central. He’s a scrappy dude, he’s so fast. The guys are much bigger, but he’s so much faster.”
After a two-game setback to start the season, Ross said he’s been impressed with how his team has battled back since.
“After the Frenchtown game it could’ve gone either way, with people feeling sorry for themselves and not working as hard, but the kids really believed we could be a good team. I don’t think anybody expected us to beat Butte Central, so that was a big momentum builder,” he said.
Whitefish hosts Browning this Friday at Memorial Field for their homecoming game. That will start at 7 p.m., with the crowning of the homecoming king and queen happening at halftime.
Ross said fending off Browning’s passing attack is the first priority.
“This is a huge game this week, playoff-wise,” Ross said. “They huck and chuck. They put a lot of points up, but they give up a lot of points.”
