Writing coaches needed to work with students

| September 11, 2018 2:24 PM

Writing Coaches of Montana seeks community members in Whitefish to help local students develop better writing skills for the 2018-19 school year. The program helps students become better critical thinkers, as well as more confident, competent writers.

Coaches come from all backgrounds and do not need to have a formal writing background. The most important qualifications are to believe good writing is an essential skill and the ability to relate to young people. Professional training is offered to new coaches, with on-going support throughout the school year.

Beyond help with writing, coaching connects students with outside community members who bring fresh perspectives and valuable life experience to the classroom.

Writing coaches work one-on-one with students, coaching them through first and second drafts of writing assignments. Coaching schedules are flexible and volunteer time is typically three to six hours per month. Coaches commit to only two class periods at a time, working with students on first and second drafts.

The Whitefish chapter is a project of the Whitefish Education Foundation, furthering its mission to enhance the quality and scope of educational opportunities for students of the Whitefish School District. Last year, volunteers coached nearly 530 students in grades eight through 12.
