After 30 years with the department, Whitefish Fire Chief Dave Sipe announced his retirement. Sipe had been chief since 1995 and first joined the department as a volunteer in 1978.

Aug. 27, 1998

It was back to the drawing board for Winter Sports Inc. after they announced a 9 percent drop in revenue during fiscal year 1998. Michael Collins, president of WSI, said media attention to El Niño, poor snow conditions early in the season and a further weakening of the Canadian dollar all contributed to the down year.

30 years ago

Aug. 31, 1988

The skies around Whitefish were gray with smoke after the Dry Fork Fire near Libby reached 11,000 acres. The fire grew from 1,500 acres the night before after a dry cold front brought fast winds through the area.

40 years ago

Aug. 31, 1978

As part of a fundraising effort, the Jungle Wonders Circus came to the Mountain Trails Saddle Club in Whitefish. Jungle Wonders was a full, three-ring circus with a heavy emphasis on animal acts but also featured clowns, trapeze acts and a full circus band. The Whitefish Jaycees sponsored the event and proceeds would benefit the Whitefish swimming pool fund.

50 years ago

Aug. 29, 1968

After publishing her book, “The Gift of Little Things,” local author Alice Jackman Hutchens held an autograph party at the Whitefish Library. The book tells the author’s story of how she met her husband as a young schoolteacher at Star Meadows.
