Three to be inducted into WHS Hall of Fame
Whitefish High School will hold the 2018 Hall of Fame induction ceremony during the Friday, Sept. 7 football game against Butte Central at Memorial Field.
This year’s inductees are Alex Maetzold, Billy Walker and Elizabeth Pitman.
Maetzold is a 2002 graduate and left his name in the record books for football and track at WHS.
Maetzold was named All Conference in football for three years and was first team All State as a running back in 2000 and 20001 and as a linebacker in 2001. He holds the single season rushing records of 1,800 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns from the 2001 season, in which he averaged 170 yards per game.
He also holds the all time rushing record of 3,900 yards.
He also medaled in the 4x400 relay, the 400 meter dash and the 200 meter dash at the state track and field meet.
As a coach, Maetzold helped bring the Bulldogs their first football state championship in decades during the 2015 season.
Billy Walker graduated from WHS in 1986 and left his mark in baseball, football, basketball and track.
In football, Walker was a two-year All Conference and All State player as a receiver, defensive back and punter. He tied the state record of 11 interceptions in one season and was awarded the most outstanding athlete of 1985.
As a player for the Glacier Twins AA, Walker was the MVP of the state tournament — which the Twins won — and helped lead the team to a third-place finish in the Northwest Regional Tournament.
He was awarded a baseball scholarship to Gonzaga University and was named All PAC-10 and All Region in 1988, 1989 and 1990.
Walker was drafted by the Miami Marlins in 1990.
Pitman’s accomplishments as a soccer player at WHS include four years of All State and All Conference honors, the state scoring leader her freshman year and the state career record holder with 101 goals, 40 assists and 242 points.
A graduate of the 2002 class, Pitman also graduated with a 4.0 gpa and was senior class president and a valedictorian.
She helped lead the Lady Dogs to a Class A State Championship in 2001 was named the 2001 Montana Gatorade Player of the Year and was featured in Sports Illustrated the same year.
At the University of Puget Sound, Pitman went on to be the all time leader in assists, fifth all time leader in points and was a four-time NCAA All Northwest Conference and All West Region first team player. She started and played 88 straight games and scored in the national championship game in 2004, where her team earned Division 3 National Runner Up honors.
She received her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Washington State University and currently works in Whitefish.
An informal pregame gathering will be held inside the north entrance of the football stadium near the concession stand. Guests are invited to come and go throughout the end of the third quarter.
The induction ceremony will take place at half time, and a no-host reception will follow the game at the Bulldog Saloon.
