Xander Burger celebrates as time expires in the Bulldogs' 6-2 Class A State Championship victory over Polson.

The Bulldogs are state champions.

Whitefish defeated Polson in the Class A State Title match Saturday at Smith Fields, showing off their offensive firepower in a 6-2 win.

Senior and captain Xander Burger capped off his career with five goals in the match, two in the first half and three in the second.

Ian Lacey scored the remaining goal on a penalty kick in the second half.

Head coach John Lacey said he was elated to see the goals his team set in the beginning of the season come to life.

“Obviously we’ve been looking forward to this day for awhile, and it’s exciting. The boys came out and earned it. They played well today,” he said.

This is Whitefish’s first state championship since 2012.

Last year they fell to Belgrade in the state title, a match that Burger sat out due to a concussion.

Lacey noted how Saturday’s match was the perfect way to send off Burger and fellow senior Ammann Koch-Ford.

“This was their last match and I have not seen a high school game like Xander’s in a long time, it was an outstanding match,” he said.

Full stats and recap will be available in Wednesday’s edition of the Pilot.
