After talks concerning the “doughnut” area around Whitefish’s city limits went sour, Flathead County moved to disband the Whitefish-City County Planning Board. County commissioners told Whitefish Mayor Mike Jenson that poor attendance by city officials at meetings led to the breakup.

20 years ago

Oct. 8, 1998

Whitefish seemed to have a bear problem, as one resident wanted to save a cub before the winter weather set in while another wanted to shoot an adult bear she felt threatened her children. Both bears would arrive on each resident’s properties consistently to look for food.

30 years ago

Oct. 12, 1988

A member of the United States Olympic Biathlon team rolled through Whitefish — literally. Raimond Dombrovskis passed through town as part of his 4,000-mile journey from Yukon to Mexico, completed entirely on rollerskates.

40 years ago

Oct. 12, 1978

Whitefish was sad to see its premier photographer, Marion Lacy, leave town. Lacy, then 69, left with his family to split time between Arizona and the Mexican coast. He cited health reasons for leaving the area, where he photographed, skied and climbed to his heart’s content since arriving in 1944.

50 years ago

Oct. 10, 1968

The Bulldogs football team won their first homecoming game in six years, beating the Anaconda Central Saints 2-0 in a unique Montana playoff overtime. By rule, no Class A game could end in a tie, so each team got the ball at the 50-yard-line, with the win going to the team that moved the ball the farthest on offense in five plays.
