The Whitefish golf team capped off an impressive year with strong finishes at the Class A State Tournament in Hamilton.

The girls took second overall behind Laurel, with Ella Shaw’s third-place finish leading the way for the team.

Shaw shot a 173 total over the two-day tournament, and Megan Archibald finished tied for sixth.

Head coach Bill Kahle said it was a solid day for his girls in Hamilton.

“We had some personal bests out there. Megan Archibald had her one-day best of the year and finished sixth, and Ella Shaw finished third. So that was great. And their two-day team total was 55 strokes less than the best in 2017, so that was very impressive,” Kahle said.

Despite not qualifying the team for state and only qualifying individuals, the boys took sixth overall anyway.

Cameron Kahle tied for second with a one-over-par score of 145, finishing eight strokes behind Ryggs Johnston of Libby.

“That’s pretty impressive, finishing behind Ryggs Johnston in second place,” Kahle said.

The tournament concludes the season for the Dogs, and Kahle said his team hit the goals they set in the summer.

“Our goal was to make it to the state tournament, which we did, and we were hoping the girls could improve on their third place finish last year and they did. The boys were up against some tough competition and we have a young team, but they shot 43 strokes lower than in 2017,” he said. “You can’t ask for much more than that.”

In addition, Shaw, Archibald, Kendall Reed, Grant Kahle and Andrew Brozek all finished with all conference honors.

Kahle credited his assistant coaches, Tait Rocksund, Jeff Doorn, Doug Reed and Sharon Kahle, along with the Gary Norby Foundation, for helping with a successful season.

“All of them were such a huge help this year and I really appreciate it,” he said.
