Funding was approved for the construction of the parking lot on the corner of Second Street and Spokane Avenue, filling a need for parking in an increasingly-crowded Whitefish. The surface-only lot replaced previous plans for a three-story lot in the same area.

Nov 19, 1998

Whitefish’s new SNOW buses hit the road for the first time, delivering skiers to the mountain through the winter. The buses, whose name stands for Shuttle Network of Whitefish, replaced the Whitefish Area Rapid Transit system. Three buses, at the price of $103,000 each, were purchased with the help of community fundraising.

30 years ago

Nov. 23, 1988

While skiers anxiously await this year’s Dec. 6 opening date, the slopes of Big Mountain opened for the season early. Limited skiing was offered on Chairs 1, 3 and 7. There were 18 inches of snow on the summit and 7 on the bottom of the mountain.

40 years ago

Nov. 22, 1978

It was to be a snowy Thanksgiving, as Whitefish was hit with 7 inches of snow over the weekend. Temperatures hovered between 8 and 12 degrees.

50 years ago

Nov. 14, 1968

A proclamation from Ed Schenck, King Ullr IX, required all male faces be “fuzzy” between sunrise Nov. 1 and sunrise the day after Winter Carnival in February. All men 21 and older were expected to grow out their beards or stay out of town, the proclamation stated. One could obtain a shaving permit, however.
