Dogs show up for Ken Good, Archie Roe
Whitefish runners are heading into the final stretch of the season with two meets to go before the Western A Divisional Meet next week.
Last week they hosted the Ken Good Dog-Cat Dual on Tuesday before competing in the tough Archie Roe Invitational at Legends Stadium in Kalispell.
As a team, the boys finished eighth and the girls ninth on Saturday among a host of Class AA and A schools, but head coach Derek Schulz said the stats don’t tell the whole story.
“We did really well. The Archie Roe didn’t disappoint in terms of the level of competition. Both of our teams competed really well. Some of that might not have shown up in the top six places as much as we’d hope for, but with that level of competition we had a lot of kids improve and I think we’re in a great spot going into our last regular season week,” he said.
On the boys side, Lee Walburn continued his strong season in the hurdles with a fourth place in the 300 (40.94). Keegan Wold took fifth in the discus (128-10), and the 4x400 relay team took third (3:33.91) behind Flathead and Glacier.
For the girls, Lydia Kryshak notched a fourth in the 400 (1:02.12) while Ella Greenberg took fourth in the 1,600 (5:28.07). Kennedy Grove took sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.67), Lauren Schulz fifth in the 100 (13.22) and the 4x400 team also finished third (4:12.79) behind Bigfork and Glacier.
In the field, Emily Gunlikson took sixth in the pole vault (8-09), Natasha Abramchuk fifth in triple jump (31-08) and Serena Hemmingson took sixth in javelin (107-06).
The meet was also one for state pre-qualifying times.
Greenberg qualified in both the 800 and 1,600, adding to the 3,200 she’d already qualified for earlier in the season.
“That’s really uncommon. She’s pre-qualified for the state track meet in all distance events,” Schulz said. “She’s having a great year.”
The 4x400 relay teams also qualified for state. The boys team is made up of Josh Weller, Walburn, Jack Schwaiger and Josh Dudley, while Annie Robertson, Mikenna Els, Kryshak and Schulz make up the girls team.
“That is a really important accomplishment and something these kids should be proud of, and it also gives us a vision that we can compete at the state level,” Schulz said of his relay teams. “It was neat. It was an awesome effort.”
This week Whitefish hosts Flathead for a Thursday dual before heading to the Polson ABC Invitational on Saturday.
Schulz said right now the priority is tightening up the roster to best utilize his athlete’s talents while at the same time keeping everyone healthy.
Thursday’s meet is about improving, but on Saturday it’s going to be getting the roster ready for divisionals on May 18.
“That’s showtime for us, we want to be at our best then,” he said.
