The Whitefish track team held its own at the A.R.M. Invitational on Saturday at home, finishing with two overall second-place finishes.

Both boys and girls took second behind Glacier at the meet, which included Valley schools as well as schools from the eastern half of Montana.

Head coach Derek Schulz said he was happy to see his team get a solid day out on the track.

“I think we had a really good day on the track and the weather cooperated. We had some excellent performances in the field and on the track,” Schulz said. “It was a meet that helped with a little bit of the catching up due to the cancellations and such.”

For the girls, a number of top three finishes led the way.

Lauren Schulz took second in the 400 (1:01.16), and Ella Greenberg notched a second in the 800 (2:32.83) and a third in the 1600 (5:32.98). Jessica Henson grabbed third in the 800 (2:33.16) and sixth in the 1600 (5:49.49) as well.

In the hurdles, Anna Cook had a solid day, taking third in the 300 (50.43) and sixth in the 100 (17.58).

In the relays, Whitefish took second in both the 4x100 and the 4x400 relays.

And in the field events, Alice Wilde took second in high jump (4-10) and Annie Robertson took second in long jump (16-02).

On the boys side, Lee Walburn led the way with a pair of firsts in the 110 high hurdles (15.62) and the 300 hurdles (41.61), and a pair of fourths in the long jump (19-07.50) and the high jump (5-08).

Jack Schwaiger (400 - 53.93), Sam Menicke (800 - 2:11.92) and Miles Vrentas (3200 - 10:53.84) all took fifth in their respective events.

Alex Barker took second in high jump (5-10), Keegan Wold took second in discus (123-05) and Dillon Botner added another silver in shot put (49-02).

Schulz said Walburn’s performances have been pleasing to see.

“He had a state qualifying time on both [hurdle events], that’s impressive, so that was a really neat thing for him. He’s worked hard,” he said.

Likewise, many of his top competitors qualified for state in the meet.

“We had numerous state qualifying marks, but we also just had all around good performances, personal bests from nearly everyone on the team, so it was exciting,” Schulz said.

Earlier in the week the team split up to head to either the Missoula Top 10 or the Eureka Top 8 on Tuesday.

In Missoula, Mikenna Els took third in the 400 (1:00.84).

Whitefish girls made a home of the podium in Eureka, with first place finishes coming from Schulz in the 100 (13.55) and 200 (28.44), Lydia Kryshak in the 400 (1:02.90), Greenberg in the 1,600 (5:35.56), Kennedy Grove in the 100 hurdles (17:57) and 300 hurdles (53.42), and Robertson in the long jump (15-05.25).

For the boys, Vrentas took first in the 3,200 (10:48.74) and Jack Eisenbarth won long jump (19-08).

Heading into the final stretch of the season, Schulz said he’s seeing things come together as a whole.

“I think our event coverage is really coming around for boys and girls,” he said. “I wouldn’t say we’re caught up to where we’d like to be, considering the obstacles we’ve had. Now we get ready for May and we just try to improve a little bit.”

This week the Dogs hosted Columbia Falls and Browning in the Ken Good Dog-Cat Dual on Tuesday after press time.

On Saturday they’ll head down to Legends Stadium for the Archie Roe Invitational.

“That’s a big meet in western Montana and one that we take a lot of pride in doing well at,” Schulz said.
